Australian Bhangra Competition

After 5 years of hiatus, Bhangra Australia are bringing back the immortal soul of Punjab, the dance of warriors, the dance to celebrate prosperity, Bhangra, to the Melbourne community!

Bhangra is a type of traditional folk dance of Punjab. In a typical performance, several dancers execute vigorous kicks, leaps, and bends of the body—often with upraised, thrusting arm or shoulder movements—to the accompaniment of short songs called boliyan and, most significantly, to the beat of a dhol. 

An energetic Punjabi dance, bhangra originated with Punjabi farmers as a cultural and communal celebration; its modern-day evolution has allowed bhangra to retain its traditional Punjabi roots, while broadening its reach to include integration into popular music and DJing, group-based competitions, and even exercise and dance programs in schools and studios.

At Bhangra Australia, our aim is to ensure that the future generation of Punjabi community and broader community at large has a platform where they can learn and perform this beautiful traditional dance form. We work along with many other Bhangra teams, academies, teachers, and community organisations to help prosper Bhangra scene in Australia. 

Australian Bhangra Competition is a one-of-a-kind event that will celebrate our cultural roots and incorporate the modern Bhangra scene as the diaspora community progresses into future realms. 

Featuring the elite and the grassroots teams in juniors and seniors in both live and music categories, Bhangra Australia is ready to unite Aus and NZ diaspora community while we dance our hearts out for you.
