Monash Screen Project Films
This program is a selection of short non-fiction films by 3rd-year, Film and Screen Studies students in the school of Media Film and Journalism at Monash University. Selected from projects created during 2025 for a subject titled Screen Project: From Film theory to Media Production these films draw upon on a range of academic and theoretical concepts as a prompt to frame creative development strategies for film projects. This selection includes films that present a diverse range of perspectives that explore themes such as travel and memory, the familial impacts of immigration, long-distance love, the housing crisis, as well as a number of films exploring gender and cultural equity issues in sports access and commemoration.

Belonging
Vache Kechichian, Junhao Wu, Lachlan Zuker, Vache Kechichian, (2025)
Belonging is a poignant short documentary that explores the emotional and psychological crossroads faced by international students nearing graduation. Through the intimate and deeply personal story of twin brothers Martin and Jayden, the film captures the tension between staying in Australia to build a future or returning home to reconnect with family. Though closely connected by blood, the twins face the same decision from starkly different perspectives— revealing the complexity of identity, belonging, and the immigrant experience.

Shuan Across Half the Earth

The film follows six Chinese international students in Melbourne as they gather around a hotpot table. Through quiet interviews and shared meals, the film explores loneliness, belonging, and the simple comfort of dipping food—and memories—into a bubbling pot far from home.

Girls Hit Harder

Girls Hit Harder follows Chloe, a seasoned fencer and mentor, as she reflects on how the sport empowers women to find strength, confidence, and community. Through her journey and the students she inspires, the film explores fencing as both a personal pursuit and a space where women thrive, despite the sport’s historical gender divide.

Lost and Found

Following the journey of 3 individual people, travel memories linger through the tangible objects collected from the experiences. The focus on travel magnets serve as a window to the experiences of people’s lives.

From Letters To Pixels

Two different generations. Two different ways to keep in touch. A roller of emotions in long-distance relationships will be introduced in From Letters To Pixels.

Sculpting Equality

Sculpting Equality is an investigative documentary that examines gender disparity in Melbourne’s public statues and what that ultimately reveals about societies approach in commemorating women's achievements.

The Family Shadow

This hybrid observational/ expository documentary which follows the uplifting story of
a family who adopted a puppy in 2021, during a time of uncertainty and change.
Through candid interviews and archival footage, this documentary shows how the
introduction of a puppy into a family was able to bring light to very tough
circumstances.

The Broke-en System

In this documentary, we invited three young Australians to play an altered version of the family classic, Monopoly. This version better reflects the current realities of living costs, pressures, and bills, all atop a near-impossible market to break into. What will await our players?
