The Democratic Set

Join us for a special public screening of THE DEMOCRATIC SET in Narre Warren before it becomes part of an online gallery that will be shared with audiences around the world.

Back to Back Theatre is one of Australia's leading contemporary theatre companies. The company is known for creating original work with a team of actors with intellectual disabilities at the heart of its creative process.

THE DEMOCRATIC SET explores the idea that everyone should have equal rights, opportunities and a voice in society.

As part of the project, Back to Back Theatre invited people from across Melbourne's south east to step onto the stage at Bunjil Place Theatre and perform for 15 seconds on camera. The result is a unique film artwork that celebrates the diversity of the community.

Come along to celebrate this unique community artwork and experience THE DEMOCRATIC SET before it is shared with audiences across the world.

This event is part of Alter State 2026.

Event schedule  

The film screening will take place outside in the Bunjil Place Plaza. Chairs will be provided. Please dress appropriately for the weather conditions.

6.00 pm         Screening of previous films from The Democratic Set archives   
6.20 pm         Premiere screening of The Democratic Set, Narre Warren 
6.30 pm         Q&A panel discussion with the film creatives
