Gurrumul

Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu was one of the most significant and prolific First Nation singers to ever grace the international stage. Blinded from birth, he fostered a deep connection with music and songs grounded in his Yolngu culture and homeplace of Elcho Island in far North East Arnhem Land. His debut album Gurrumul brought him international fame and recognition which he consistently grappled with throughout his career. In alignment with the John Mawurndjul exhibition in the Gallery we are bringing to you Gurrumul, a beautiful film about another Arnhem Land artist whose astounding career was rooted in traditional culture and country. Directed by Paul Williams the film casts in insight to world of fame unbeknown to a blind Yolngu man from Echo Island. Williams said "I really wanted to show the difficulty that an indigenous person from a remote traditional community has interfacing with the white, balanda, world. In particular interfacing with the expectation of celebrity, the expectation of fame and the expectations of what was rapidly becoming an international music career."
