Ever dreamt of performing on stage?

Posted: Fri 2 Oct
Read time: 2 minutes

This October, step onto the Bunjil Place Theatre stage and become part of a film created with Back to Back Theatre.

Everyone is welcome to take part—no performance experience is needed. The finished film will premiere at Bunjil Place as part of Alter State Festival on Friday 4 December, before being shared on The Democratic Set web page for audiences around the world.

Who?
Back to Back Theatre is one of Australia’s leading contemporary theatre companies. It has forged its own unique relationship to theatre, developing an original, distinctive artistic voice and a working process that supports its ensemble of actors with intellectual disabilities as its creative core.

Why?
Through THE DEMOCRATIC SET, Back to Back Theatre seeks to explore the belief that all people are, in principle, equal and should enjoy social, political and economic rights and opportunities. Embracing this philosophy, Back to Back invites everyone and anyone in Casey into their film set to perform for 15 seconds to camera.

What?
You are invited to spend 20 minutes with the creative team in their purpose-built film set in Bunjil Place Theatre and, alongside members of the company, explore grand ideals of equality and freedom.  Contributions are neither restricted nor censored. THE DEMOCRATIC SET is open to your personal responses. This could include solos, duets and group performances, using movement, sound, costumes and props* of any kind - you choose. Alternatively, you could simply stand in the set totally still and say nothing.
* We encourage you to bring larger sized props so they read well on camera. The camera will be approximately 6 metres away from you when you perform in the box

When?
Filming will happen on Sunday 11, Monday 12, Tuesday 13 October in the Bunjil Place Theatre
Spots are allocated as follows: 20 minutes for 1 person, 20 minutes for 2-5 people or 40 minutes for a group of 15 people.

So please be aware that minimum time commitment is 20 minutes not 15 seconds!
If you can, Back to Back also encourages you to come 15 minutes prior to your appointment, to observe what others are doing, before you give it a try.
