Disability-led arts take centre stage at Bunjil Place this December
What does it mean to be seen, heard and connected?
This December, Bunjil Place will welcome two disability-led arts experiences as part of Alter State 2026, inviting the Casey community to take part in creativity, conversation and celebration.
Founded and presented by Arts Centre Melbourne and Arts Access Victoria, Alter State is a disability-led arts initiative that celebrates Deaf and Disabled artists, culture and creativity. The 2026 program explores the theme Regeneration: Building Deaf and Disabled Futures.
As one of Alter State's outer metropolitan partners, Bunjil Place will host two events that create opportunities for participation, self-expression and community connection.
Step onto ‘The Democratic Set’
Created by internationally acclaimed theatre company Back to Back Theatre, ‘The Democratic Set’ is a participatory film project that invites local people to perform a short scene on a custom-built film set.
Participants are encouraged to explore ideas of equality, freedom and belonging through performance. Each filmed contribution becomes part of a larger community artwork, with the completed film premiering later in December at a free outdoor screening in the Bunjil Place Plaza.
No previous performance experience is required, making it an accessible opportunity for people to share their voice and become part of a collective creative project.
Dance, connect and celebrate at Discobility
Bunjil Place will also host Discobility, an inclusive dance party that has been bringing people together through music, movement and connection for more than two decades.
Designed for adults aged 18 and over with disability, the event will be facilitated by John Zammit and feature guest DJ and local artist Jordz.
The evening offers a welcoming space to dance, socialise and enjoy music at your own pace. A sensory space will be available throughout the event and afterwards as a quiet place to relax and recharge.
